Hult through Usamah’s eyes
Meet our cover star, Usamah Khan, from the Class of 2020. With a desire to become an expert in all aspects of business, he decided it was time to study Hult’s Dual Degree MBA program with a specialist Masters in Business Analytics.
Who doesn’t want to live and study in London?! The city has everything you could want. Music, art, and photography are my biggest passions in life and London abounds with pop-ups, exhibitions, and museums. It’s a great city to immerse yourself in for any industry, especially the thriving tech scene with exposure to all the major consulting firms. I’ve done several workshops at IBM in South Bank with friends from Hult.
Before Hult, I was working in Canada as a data scientist for a tech and design company. Although I had a good job, friends, a cat called Mia, and I’d just gotten married, I felt it was time to really shake things up. I wanted to develop all the skills you need for a business startup, from marketing to analytics, strategy to finance, entrepreneurship to leadership. Hult offered me everything I was looking for, so my wife and I decided to move to London.
The friendships I formed at Hult are for life. It’s like having a trusted network of loyal friends that push each other to grow and lift each other up. For example, one of my friends has this strong presence when she speaks and the ability to articulate a thought, down to the smallest detail, which I admire. Another friend has a creative flair that drives him to think outside the box. I’m sure many of those I studied with at Hult I’ll see in the news or read about online achieving amazing things.
My Hult professors were awe-inspiring. They come from varied backgrounds and bring so much knowledge and experience from their specific field to class. No question gets an unsatisfactory answer, and they’re always excited to talk to you about the class or an idea you may have. But my favorite thing about the professors was their distinct personalities and teaching styles. For example, my accounting professor turned number-crunching into a dynamic comedy session!
Setting up a completely new club from scratch, meeting new people, and seeing it successfully grow was one of my Hult highlights. As president of the Data & Analytics Society, I organized key speakers and workshops for data fanatics like myself. One week it was data visualization, the next it was how to install Python on your laptop. I’ve realized I’m super passionate about sharing what I love.
One of my proudest moments was winning the Most Sustainable Business Concept Award and Hult Future Entrepreneurs Prize for our team project in the Future Mindset Challenge. We had to consider everything—product, strategy, marketing, business model, finances. Each of us brought something to the table, which made our business concept even stronger. I’m constantly blown away by my classmates’ creativity, research, and diligence.
