What is personal branding and why is it important?
It’s how you’re known or thought of by other people. It’s an important tool to use when presenting who you are, what you can do, and why people should want to work with you. When you’re able to showcase the “why” and “how” in your story, it adds authenticity, which is interesting to employers.
You make a great new connection—what next?
Understand your mission—what do you want out of this new relationship? The follow-up is important as it sets the tone and encourages a mutual exchange of information. Ask open questions, be insightful, and show them what you know. It’ll lead to a more meaningful conversation.

“Ask a thousand questions. Be one of the noisiest people ever! Remember, all the CEOs started somewhere.”
Manuel Schüler
German
Summer Analyst, Goldman Sachs
Incoming Consultant, McKinsey
Bachelor of Business Administration, Class of 2021
After graduation, Manuel went up against 125,000 other applicants to secure a summer internship at Goldman Sachs. He starts full-time with McKinsey in September.
How can you set yourself apart?
My first internship was with one of the “big four” executive search firms and secured off the back of randomly texting one of the partners and challenging them on their diversity. Very senior people are often trapped in a bubble. As a young person, you bring a fresh perspective and new ideas. Anyone will give you some form of advice if you ask the right questions. So, find some interesting common ground and take it from there. You’ve got 30 seconds!
Best way to spend your time at Hult?
Spend your first year at Hult trying out everything. You have all the opportunities, all the support, all the advice. Professors, the careers team, and my fellow students all helped me figure it out. My careers advisor approached it as “Where can we go to next? How do we build a coherent story so that, when you graduate, your dream employer basically has to hire you?”
Who will I work with?
